Narrative
Fourteen months later, on the day after Christmas in 1862, Thomas and the
Indiana 22nd were between Murfreesboro and Nashville, Tennessee in the early
stages of fighting the Battle of Stones River. At nearby Nolensville, Thomas
was severly injured in the thigh. He was evacuated and taken to any Army
Hospital in Cincinnati where he died of Variola (Small Pox) five months later
on May 17, 1863 at age 19 years and 9 months.
