Event Note

Joseph's birth year seems to be either 1873 or 1874 dependent on the document you look at.

In his naturalization record, it states 14-OCT-1874
In the ship's manifest that he emigrated to America on he was 17 in April of 1892 which would make him born in 1874
1910 US Census states 35 in April of 1910 making him born in 1874
1920 US Census states 47 in Feb of 1920 making him born in 1872
1930 US Census states 57 in April of 1930 making him born in 1872
In his Bizonyítvány it is hard to read the year it could be 1872 or 1874
In his Keresztlevél it states 1874
In his Községi Bizonyítvány it states 1873
His death certificate (filled out by his daughter Clara Stifter (Kelly)) states 1873
His head stone also states 1873
St. Mary's Church Records from November 13, 1930 Joseph Stifter age 56 or 57 (57 looked to be written over the 56) making him born in either 1873 or 1874

Since his head stone states 1873, I am going to stick with that. I somewhat discount all of the census stuff as there are other factual errors I can note. In the censuses he always states he is from Germany or Baden, when he was in fact from Austria-Hungary. He also states that he immigrated to America in 1881, but in his naturalization record and the ship record it shows 1892. However it does seem most of the important documents that Joseph himself (or maybe his parents) would have provided information for (Naturalization Record, Ship Manifest, Bizonyítvány, Keresztlevél) all state 1874. The only only I can't account for is the Községi Bizonyítvány.
